(Received 30 Agu 2009; Accepted 6 Oct 2009) Background: Nonpenetrating tracheobronchial disruption are rare and potentially life threatening and associated with blunt thoracic trauma. Sometimes diagnosis is missed. Methods: 2340 traumatic patients were admitted to the trauma center of Tabriz University Hospital, Iran. Only twelve patients of them had ruptured tracheobronchial airways following blunt chest trauma. In this retrospective study of twelve patients, we aim to document and evaluate causes, presentation, and diagnosis and treatment modalities over fourteen years (19932006). Results: All the cases admitted to our referral hospital from six hours to 72 hours, underwent surgical interventions. There were two deaths; one in the operating room because of massive bleeding of pulmonary vascular disruptions coexisted with trachobronchial injuries and in other due to severity of disruption of carina, right and left bronchus five days after repair. Diagnosis was missed in one patient and he repaired after six month. Stricture formation of anastomotic site and localized empyema with bronchopleural fistula were the complications of two patients. Conclusion: A high-level of suspicion in blunt thoracic trauma and use of bronchoscopy confirm the diagnosis of tracheobronchial disruption. Early diagnosis of tracheobronchial disruption is important, but severity of disruptions predisposes mortality. A recent series gleaning cases from four major Trauma Center in Los Angeles nine cases in a seven- year period , but the incidence of these injuries has been increasing recently. This has been attributed to improvement...
متن کاملLeft main bronchus separation after blunt trauma
Tracheobronchial damage is very rare in clinical practice and represents no more than 1% of all injuries caused by blunt trauma. Nearly 80% of patients die before reaching the hospital. Most ruptures are observed in the right main bronchus and are located within 2 cm of the carina trachea. The highest mortality rate applies to patients with bilateral bronchial injuries. Nonspecific symptoms, ad...
متن کاملTraumatic Tracheobronchial Injury: Delayed Diagnosis and Treatment Outcome
BACKGROUND Most traumatic tracheobronchial injuries are fatal and result in death. Some milder cases are not life threatening and are often missed at the initial presentation. Tracheobronchial rupture is difficult to diagnose in the evaluation of severe multiple trauma patients. We reviewed the traumatic tracheobronchial injuries at Konyang University and Eulji University Hospital and analyzed ...

Laryngotracheal and tracheobronchial injuries are uncommon, and their successful diagnosis and management often require a high level of expertise. This paper aimed at retrospective analysis of a thoracic surgeon's experience in the diagnosis and management of traumatic injuries to the larynx, trachea and major bronchi. Forty one patients with major airway trauma were managed from March 1994 to ...
